HEALTH HAZARD ALERT

VALLI BRAND ASSORTED MUSHROOMS IN OIL MAY CONTAIN DANGEROUS BACTERIA

OTTAWA, March 22, 2005 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Les Aliments Valli Foods Inc. are warning the public not to consume Valli brand Assorted Mushrooms In Oil described below because the product may be contaminated with the bacteria responsible for botulism, a food borne illness in humans.

The affected product, Valli brand Assorted Mushrooms In Oil, is sold in a 1 L glass jar bearing UPC 0 69413 17950 5. The following 21 codes of this product are affected by this alert:

The manufacturer, Les Aliments Valli Foods Inc., Montreal, Quebec, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The affected product has been distributed in Quebec and Ontario.

Botulism is a life-threatening illness caused by the build-up of toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Food contaminated with C. botulinum may or may not look or smell spoiled. The product should not be consumed by humans or animals. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
