UPDATE - HEALTH HAZARD ALERT

VALLI BRAND ASSORTED MUSHROOMS IN OIL MAY CONTAIN DANGEROUS BACTERIA

OTTAWA, April 7, 2005 - The public warning issued on March 24, 2005 is being updated to better identify the recalled product. The reason for this update is to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding resulting from discrepancies of the target codes referred to in the public warning issued on March 24th. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Les Aliments Valli Foods Inc. are warning the public not to consume Valli brand Assorted Mushrooms In Oil described below because the product may be contaminated with the bacteria responsible for botulism, a food borne illness in humans.

The affected product, Valli brand Assorted Mushrooms In Oil, is sold in a 1 L glass jar bearing UPC 0 69413 17950 5. The consumers can easily identify the affected product by the UPC only.

The manufacturer, Les Aliments Valli Foods Inc., Montreal, Quebec, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The affected product has been distributed nationally.

Botulism is a life-threatening illness caused by the build-up of toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Food contaminated with C. botulinum may or may not look or smell spoiled. The product should not be consumed by humans or animals.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
