ALLERGY ALERT

UNDECLARED EGG IN CERTAIN YTS VEGGIE FOOD BRAND VEGETARIAN PRODUCTS

OTTAWA, May 10, 2005 - The allergy advisory issued on May 9, 2005 is being updated to include information on products which were distributed in Canada.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning people with allergies to egg protein not to consume YTS Veggie Food brand vegetarian products described below. These products contain egg protein which is not declared on the label. This alert is of concern to those individuals who have allergies to egg protein.

The allergy advisory from May 9, 2005 identified that the affected products had specified Expiration dates from 4/27/04 to 4/27/05. However, packages sold in Canada may not have an expiration date. Therefore all packages of the following YTS Veggie Food brand products distributed in Canada are affected by this alert:

  • Veggie Lamb, 10 OZ (283 g), UPC 6 42971 95705 3.
  • Veggie Golden Roast, 1 LB (454 g), UPC 6 42971 95701 5.
  • Liang Zen Golden Ham, 2.2 LB (35.3 OZ), UPC 6 42971 95712 1.

The importer Perfect International Co. Ltd., North York, Ontario is voluntarily recalling these products from the marketplace. The affected products imported from United States of America have been distributed only in the Greater Toronto Area.

Consumption of these products may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to egg protein. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

The CFIA is continuing its food safety investigation and monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
