AMENDMENT - HEALTH HAZARD ALERTGROUND BEEF SOLD FROM CERTAIN STORES MAY CONTAIN E. coli 0157:H7 BACTERIARelated Alerts: 2005-06-10 | 2005-06-11 OTTAWA, June 11, 2005 - The public warning issued on June 10, 2005 has been amended to clarify the brand name and Best Before date for the affected product sold from the 49th Parallel Grocery Ltd. in Ladysmith, British Columbia.(**) The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Pitt Meadows Meats Ltd. are warning the public not to consume ground beef sold from certain stores listed below. These products may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7 bacteria. Only the ground beef sold from the following stores is affected by this alert.
The meat producer, Pitt Meadows Meats Ltd., Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, has voluntarily recalled the affected meat from the marketplace. MarketPlace IGA had earlier issued a precautionary recall notice for E. Coli on May 30th. Although the affected products are not in the stores, some consumers may have affected products in their freezers. For this reason, consumers are advised to check their freezers and not to consume the affected products. E. coli 0157:H7 causes serious and potentially life-threatening illness by producing a toxin that can break down the lining of the intestines and damage the kidneys. Food contaminated with the E. coli bacteria will not look or smell spoiled. These products should not be consumed. There have been no confirmed illnesses associated with the consumption of these products. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
