NON-PERMITTED COLOUR SUDAN I IN RAJAH BRAND CURRY POWDERS

OTTAWA, August 3, 2005 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume Rajah brand Curry Powders described below. These products may contain a non-permitted colour, Sudan I, which is considered to be carcinogenic.

The following Rajah brand Curry Powders are affected by this alert:

These products imported from the United Kingdom may have been distributed nationally.

Sudan 1, a red dye, is not allowed as a food colour in Canada. It has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and these findings could also be significant for human health. Its presence in the above mentioned products was identified in Europe. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
