Siberian Silk Moth - Dendrolimus
superans
|
In its native range of northern Asia, Dendrolimus superans, can
be a very serious and destructive pest of larches (Larix spp.) and soft
5-needled pines (Pinus spp.), but other conifers
may also be attacked. During major outbreaks which occur every 8 to 11 years
the larvae can defoliate hundreds of thousands of hectares. The unusual and
complex lifecycle of this pest has made it very difficult to control in
it's native range. There are 3 known subspecies of this pest, D. superans superans
which occurs only in Japan, D. superans albolineatus which occurs on the
Sakhalin and Kuril islands and D. superans sibiricus which is widespread on
the Asian continent. |
