NEW FOOD SAFETY INITIATIVE LAUNCHED IN NOVA SCOTIA

Halifax, NS, March 16, 2006 - Nova Scotia will receive $370,000 from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to further the implementation of food safety systems in its food processing sector. The Food Safety Initiative will help the industry maintain its high standards in food safety and quality.

The Food Safety Initiative was announced today by Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board Chuck Strahl and Nova Scotia Agriculture Minister Ron Chisholm.

In Nova Scotia, food safety activities will be directed towards increasing the sector's awareness and knowledge of the food safety risks associated with food processing and the benefits of implementing appropriate food safety process control systems.

"We are moving towards a system that will help us to be more consistent in how food safety measures are applied," said Minister Strahl. "It will further enhance Canada's reputation as a producer of safe and high-quality food. We are pleased to be working with the Government of Nova Scotia on this important initiative."

The Food Safety Initiative will be targeting food and agri-food businesses in Nova Scotia for the outreach elements of this program. The value of food manufacturing shipments out of the province by these businesses was approximately $1 billion in 2004.

"The outreach component of this Food Safety Initiative is an important step in assisting the industry to meet the increasingly high food safety standards demanded by the marketplace," said Minister Chisholm.

The Food Safety Initiative is funded under the Agricultural Policy Framework, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative that aims to position Canada as the world leader in food safety, innovation and environmentally responsible agricultural production.
