$200,000 TO IMPROVE AGRICULTURE LAND-USE PRACTICES IN NOVA SCOTIA

TRURO, Nova Scotia, June 7, 2006 - Nova Scotia’s agricultural community is receiving $200,000 in federal funding from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to demonstrate the benefits of land-use practices and their impact on wetlands, soil erosion, water quality and wildlife.

"This initiative will protect waterways and improve land flanking Nova Scotia’s watercourses and demonstrates this government’s commitment to the environment," said the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board. "This is an excellent example of government, producers and industry groups working together to improve on-farm management of the environment."

The funding will be used by the Kings Agricultural Wetland and Biodiversity Conservation Initiative (KAWBCI) to establish demonstration sites in Nova Scotia. It will show local producers the economic and environmental benefits of adapting environmental management practices to their farms. Producers will be able to assess how these practices can be implemented on their own farms and see first-hand how they work.

KAWBCI was developed by the Nova Scotia-Eastern Habitat Joint Venture to support an agricultural landscape where wetlands and tidal and riverbank habitats are conserved and restored to protect the environment. The initiative is a partnership effort involving national environment groups, governments, community-based conservation groups, corporations and individual landowners.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is working with provincial, territorial and industry partners to develop programs and promote sound farm stewardship practices which contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for all Canadians and safer, healthier food for consumers.
