This chart shows the Canadian cattle prices as an indicator of market integration.
Short-term price differences affect imports.
- From 1978 to 1988, the Fed. Cattle price remained around 20 Canadian dollars per hundred
weight, while the import levels remained below 500 cattle imports.
- In 1989, the Fed. Cattle price was about was about 30 dollars per hundred weight, while
the import level rose to more than 500.
- In 1990 and 1991, the Fed. Cattle price climbed to more than 40 dollars per hundred
weight, while the import levels rose to about 750.
- In 1992 and 1993, the Fed. Cattle price was more than 50 dollars per hundred weight,
while the import levels rose to more than 1,000.
- In 1994, the price remained about 50 dollars per hundred weight, and import levels fell
below 1,000, while the price climbed to more than 60 dollars per hundred weight in 1996
and import levels rose to 1,500.
- In 1998, the price remained about 60 dollars per hundred weight, and import levels were
about 1,250.
