T-3-1 - VITAMIN A AND BETA-CAROTENE GUARANTEES

September 1, 1997

Pursuant to the Feeds Regulations, Vitamin A guarantees on feed labels are considered to be sustained if the total Vitamin A activity of the feed from both Vitamin A and beta-carotene is equivalent to the guaranteed level of Vitamin A.

The Animal Health and Production Division has had requests to permit inclusion of beta-carotene guarantees on livestock feed labels. As requirements for beta-carotene have been well established in most livestock species, the Feed Section will allow guarantees on feed labels for minimum mg/kg of beta-carotene. Feeds with label guarantees for beta-carotene require registration and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Registrants will be advised should additional labelling requirements be judged necessary.

The Vitamin A guarantee will have to specify if it includes the Vitamin A activity from beta-carotene. In such cases, the following conversion factors will be used to determine the Vitamin A activity from beta-carotene:

Type of Feed Vitamin A activity from 1 milligram of beta-carotene
Poultry 1667 IU
Swine 149 IU
Cattle 400 IU
Sheep 681 IU
Horses 400 IU
