Shelterbelt Tree Program

The Shelterbelt Tree Program is a permanent program for the distribution of seedlings for planting shelterbelts or for conservation and land reclamation projects in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and in the Peace River region of British Columbia. Technical assistance is available free of charge.

Eligibility Criteria

• bona fide farmers and producers;
• Federal and provincial government departments;
• municipal governments (villages, towns, cities);
• charitable organizations;
• Band Councils or individuals for planting trees on Indian Reserves;

Private business, golf courses, resorts or individuals in urban centres are not eligible.

Description

PFRA's Shelterbelt Centre in Indian Head, Saskatchewan produces trees and shrubs which are distributed to farmers and Conservation Boards for planting trees on farms and in fields, for the creation of wildlife habitat and for agroforestry initiatives in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and in the Peace River region of British Columbia. The program promotes shelterbelt planting for soil conservation, snow management and crop stabilisation.

Trees and shrubs are distributed free of charge. Applicants are responsible to cover transportation costs and to plant and maintain the shelterbelts. Seedlings are shipped to the closest Agricultural Representative or Agricultural Fieldman Office or Rural Service centre in the spring ( usually late April to mid-May).
