Technical Workshop on the Management of Herbicide Tolerant Crops

The Plant Biosafety Office held a technical workshop on the management of herbicide tolerant (HT) crops in Ottawa, Ontario, on September 9-10, 2003. Invited to attend were representatives from industry, provincial and federal government bodies, agriculture and agribusiness associations as well as academia.

This workshop focused on scientific and technical aspects of HT crop cultivation. Specifically, there were four objectives sought:

  1. To gain a better understanding of current management practices as well as the benefits and problems experienced with the cultivation of HT crops;

  2. To identify potential solutions to continue and improve the management and stewardship of HT crops;

  3. To identify future challenges that both industry and regulatory bodies may face with the cultivation of HT crops; and,

  4. To identify any outstanding knowledge gaps regarding the management of HT crops as well as to identify research priorities.

For each objective, presentations were given and participants were divided into groups for discussion on the topics presented. A report on the proceedings of the workshop is available for reference and includes abstracts from the speakers’ presentations as well as summaries of the group discussions.
