Trees and Shrubs for Prairie ShelterbeltsThe following pages outline the characteristics and use of trees and shrubs produced by the PFRA Shelterbelt Centre for planting on prairie farms. The information is not presented as a detailed taxonomic description but is designed to provide the user with a means of identifying trees in established belts and in determining desirable species for new plantings. Careful consideration is required to select the appropriate species for each shelterbelt design and planting site. The environment varies across the prairies and the figures provided are characteristic of trees found growing under good conditions. Moisture, fertility, exposure, crowding, pruning and other cultural practices greatly affect longevity, form and size. Species Recommended for Shelterbelts (Table
1) Trees and shrubs described within this publication are currently available from the PFRA Shelterbelt Centre at Indian Head to eligible applicants. Those eligible to receive trees include farmers, owners of rural small holdings, charitable organizations, Indian bands and government agencies. In addition, planning services are available for farmers. All applications for planning services and trees are serviced on a first come first served basis. Early application is recommended in order to receive species and services desired. Applications are accepted starting June 1 for delivery the following spring.
