District description

The Morden District runs along the US border from the Red River to the edge of Roblin Municipality and north to Lake Manitoba, encompassing a very diverse agricultural area. Agricultural production includes grains and oilseeds, special crops, horticulture, hogs, cattle and dairy. Major non-agricultural activities include service, manufacturing and tourism.

In addition to the individual dugout and well program, there is significant individual irrigation development, and a strong demand for group and community pipelines. The Rural Water Development Program focuses on group projects with the greatest long-term benefit to rural areas.

Initiatives identified by Local Delivery Groups for project funding relate to soil conservation, water quality protection/enhancement, reduction in agricultural pollution, waste management, forage and pasture management, shelterbelt establishment and maintenance, riparian zone rehabilitation, erosion control structures, and integrated pest management. Assistance to Manitoba Corn Growers for tile drainage and Agassiz Irrigation Association is targeted at sustainability issues.

A major research initiative at South Tobacco Creek involving multiple government agencies and the Deerwood Soil and Water Management Association continues to generate information for integrated land/water management.

Land/Soil management activities include monitoring the land under Permanent Cover Program, assisting Local Delivery Groups with project implementation, on-farm conservation planning, research/advice for shelterbelt planting and weed control, evaluation of mature shelterbelts, investigating strip cropping and terracing.

PFRA is supporting a major initiative by the Agassiz Irrigation Association which will ensure the future of horticulture crops, particularly potatoes in the Winkler/Carman area.
