Approved National ACAAF Projects - June 2006

The following ACAAF national projects were approved by the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Minister of the Canadian Wheat Board to receive ACAAF funding:

Canadian Honey Council (CHC)

Forging a New Direction (NA0139)

The CHC will undertake a national action plan to reinvent the CHC, embark on promoting Canadian honey and develop a national strategy to address current challenges and emerging issues in the Canadian honeybee industry. The project's activities include developing a communications plan, Web site enhancement, designing and launching outreach projects and preparing a background paper for emerging issues/policy development and research) and, creating an action plan for the future direction of the CHC. The CHC will report on progress at the 2008 national convention, implement an action plan and plan for a future international conference.

Canadian Farm Animal Genetic Resources Foundation

Development of a Plan of Action to Preserve Genetic Variability and Diversity in Canadian Farm Animals (NA0144)

The project will address the development and implementation of strategies for conserving livestock genetic variability as a cooperative effort between the applicant, its members, Canadian universities and the Centre for Animal Genetic Resources. Activities will include the establishment of options for the application of the methods to the Canadian context and the establishment of priorities and action plan for the Canadian livestock industry.

Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA)

The Green Label-Branding Canada at Home (NA0141)

The objective of this project is to evaluate the potential Canadian consumer demand for a "Green Label" product. A "Green Label" on food products at the retail sales level would indicate that the product was grown and processed in Canada with Canadian standards of food safety and environmental stewardship and that the product achieved a fair return to the farmer.

Approved National ACAAF Projects - May 2006

The following ACAAF national projects were approved by the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Minister of the Canadian Wheat Board to receive ACAAF funding:

Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (C.A.F.E.)

Consumer Protection Program for Farm Animal Contact at Fairs, Exhibitions and Shows (NA0135)

The C.A.F.E. project is designed to enhance consumer protection at events featuring farm animals, and includes awareness building activities, workshops to provide industry-wide training and education activities to fair, exhibition and agricultural show operators, and a continuing education component to provide resource materials for train the trainer as well as follow-up training for program participants. Also included are program evaluation activities to provide benchmark information and to evaluate the impact and quality of the deliverables/outcomes from the project.

Canadian Community Economic Development Network (CCEDN)

Growing Hope (NA0148)

The project involves a cross-sectoral dialogue on regional food security issues and food development, followed by dissemination of two information products: a special edition of the applicant's "Making Waves" publication, and a draft model policy and policy recommendations on regional food security. The initiative will engage diverse parts of the value chain, other sectors and build relationships between community-based agencies, industry and farming organizations.

Canadian Horticultural Council (CHC)

Development of National Research Priorities for the Canadian Apple Industry (NA0132)

The purpose of the project is to develop and disseminate a national research strategy in collaboration with industry and government partners for the Canadian apple industry. The CHC will use the funding to coordinate a national workshop attended by apple growers, packers, retailers, and representatives from the federal and provincial governments and industry associations. The workshop seeks to identify research priorities and develop a national research strategy for Canada's apple industry. A final report and a summary brochure based on the results of the workshop will be shared with interested stakeholders.

Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology (CIFST)

CIFST/AAFC 2006 Joint Conference (NA0149)

A national joint conference of CIFST and AAFC under the theme of "At the Forefront of Agri-Food Innovation" was held in Montreal May 28-30, 2006, to highlight innovation in food science and technology from Canada and around the world. The conference brought together university, industry and government food professionals from Canada and other countries to exchange ideas and knowledge about innovations in food science and technology which will provide new opportunities to the Canadian industry.

Canadian Pork Council (CPC)

Implementation of the Animal Care Assessment Tool (NA0131)

The CPC project will implement an auditable on-farm animal care program on Canadian hog farms, known as the Animal Care Assessment (ACA). This new assessment tool will help producers to demonstrate the level of care they provide on-farm and set appropriate minimum requirements. The new tool will be implemented using the structure and system developed and currently in place for CQA®-the on-farm food safety program for Canadian hog producers. The CPC will finalize and distribute materials to hog producers in all provinces/territory, encouraging participation, creating awareness of the program and developing a training program for CQA® program validators in each province/territory.

Keystone Agricultural Producers (KAP)

ALUS: An Ecological Goods and Services Research Project (NA0147)

The purpose of this Ecological Goods and Services pilot project is to test a new method of bridging the environmental demands of Canadians and the policy requirements that foster socially and economically viable farming and rural communities. These demands include protection of species at risk, biodiversity, clean water, healthy soils and protection of water resources. As all Canadians expect and share in the benefits of farmers' environmental management, the project proposes that a mechanism be established to share the costs of these services.

Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO)

Novel Therapeutic and Prophylactic Approaches to Infectious Disease Control (NA0133)

VIDO is studying novel compounds to reduce or replace antibiotics in livestock and poultry operations. The research will lead to improved protection of livestock from all infectious diseases, safer food for consumers and decreased environmental contamination by disease-causing organisms transmitted through food and water.

Approved National Projects - January 2006

Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute (CAPI)

National Forum with 320-300 Leaders and Stakeholders or the Agri-Food Sector (NA0138)

CAPI received funding to organize a National Policy Forum and Dialogue in January 2006 to build on their analysis of the factors affecting farm income prospects and the June 2005 Farm Income Forum. CAPI will continue to focus on policy implications and competitiveness in the agriculture and agri-food sector, a priority issue of the department.
