GLOSSARY OF TERMS AND ACRONOYMS

Glossary of Terms

Acid Plant
A process that converts sulphur dioxide released during processing into sulphuric acid.
ARET
Accelerated Reduction/Elimination of Toxic Substances.
Baghouse
An air pollution control device used to trap particulate by filtering gas streams through large fabric bags, usually made of glass fibres.
By-product
Material that is produced and sold during the production of another material (or other materials) whose production and sales form(s) the economic basis of the operation.
Electrostatic Precipitator
An air pollution control device that removes particulate matter by imparting an electrical charge to particles in a gas stream for mechanical collection on an electrode.
Effluent
A release into water.
Emission
A release into air.
Emission Factor
Quantity of emission relative to the amount of material processed. Typically used to estimate the amount of pollutant emitted.
Environmental Management System
Part of the overall management system that includes organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing and maintaining the environmental policy.
Environmental Policy
Statement by the organization of its intentions and principles in relation to its overall environmental performance which provides a framework for action and for the setting of its environmental objectives and targets.
Fugitive Emissions
Air pollutants that enter the atmosphere without first passing through a stack or duct designed to direct or control their flow.
Greenhouse Gas
A greenhouse gas absorbs and radiates heat in the lower atmosphere that would otherwise would be lost to space. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxides (N2O).
ISO 14001
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an international federation of over 100 national standards bodies, which has developed a series of integrated environmental management standards, known as the ISO 14000 series.
Loading
The estimated weight or mass of material carried by air or water flows. Often expressed over a defined period of time or over the production rate.
Particulate Matter
Particulates are any finely divided solid or liquid in the air or in an emission. Particulates include dust, smoke fumes and mist.
Pollution Prevention
The use of processes, practices, materials, products or energy that avoid or minimize the creation of pollutants and waste, and reduce overall risk to human health or the environment.
Product Stewardship
Making health, safety and environmental protection an integral part of a product's life cycle-from design, manufacture, marketing, sale, and distribution, to use, recycling and disposal.
Release
Discharge into the natural environment.
Scrubber
An air pollution control device that uses a liquid spray to remove pollutants from a gas stream by absorption or chemical reaction. Scrubbers also reduce the temperature of the gas stream.
Sedimentation
In wastewater treatment, the settling out of solids by gravity.
Sustainable Development
Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. (Canadian Environmental Assessment Act).
Target
Detailed performance requirement, quantified where possible.
Virtual Elimination
The ultimate reduction of the quantity or concentration of the substance in the release below the level of quantification55.
