Survey on the Importance of Nature to Canadians:
A Federal-Provincial-Territorial Initiative
The Survey on the Importance of Nature to Canadians, which assesses
the social and economic value of nature-related activities to Canadians,
drew on a nationwide partnership of 16 federal,
provincial, and territorial agencies.
The survey examined the popularity of nature-related recreational activities,
participation in these activities according to the natural areas in which
they take place (such as the ecozones of Canada), and the significant
benefits to the economy resulting from spending on these activities.
Socioeconomic insights based on survey results will contribute to the
management of Canada's wildlife, water, forests, and protected areas that
are essential for the public's enjoyment of nature-related activities.
The Nature Survey will be an important contribution to the economic
valuation of the environmental goods and services that benefit people
and the economy. Results are needed to estimate the value of Canada's
natural capital, green national income accounts and devise new indicators
of sustainability.
Statistics Canada, on behalf of the partnership, surveyed approximately
87,000 Canadians 15 years of age or over between February and June 1997,
covering activities in the calendar year 1996.
1996 Nature Survey
Two major reports on Highlights of survey results and on the Economic
Significance of Nature-related Activities have been prepared by a Task
Force representing survey partners. The reports are intended for wide
audiences in government, nongovernment organizations, industry, universities
and schools, the media, and the public.
The Importance of Nature to Canadians:
1981, 1987, and 1991 Wildlife Surveys
The 1996 survey is an update and expansion of surveys co-sponsored by
a similar partnership in 1981, 1987, and 1991 under the name "Survey on
the Importance of Wildlife to Canadians."

Canada Client Services.
