Welcome
Welcome to the Circumpolar
Website!
We hope that you will be
inspired by what you find on this website and that you will return often to
read about new developments and activities. Our goal is to encourage you to
delve deeper into the fascinating worlds of the Arctic and the Antarctic.
The North is an essential part
of Canada’s identity and an area of growing
importance internationally. Over the past few years northerners, including
Indigenous peoples comprising up to 80% of the population in some regions, have
brought a number of emerging issues to the world’s attention: the dangers and
challenges posed by climate change; the need for sustainable economic
development; and the importance of sharing experiences and knowledge with our
circumpolar neighbours and with the larger world. The Northern
Dimension of Canada’s Foreign Policy (NDFP) responds to these challenges in
a manner that is both innovative and comprehensive.
The key priority areas for the
NDFP are Canada’s involvement in the Arctic Council, the
University of the Arctic, cooperation in Northern Russia, promoting sustainable development and
cooperation with our circumpolar neighbours, the European Union and other
regional bodies. We are making progress in all these areas and the information
found on this website will allow you to learn more about our policy and its
implementation.
The Arctic Council, which is a
unique forum of cooperative consensus between the eight Arctic States and six
Indigenous organizations, serves as a principal way for addressing many of the
common concerns and challenges faced by the Arctic States.
