Transportation Outreach Programs

Making transportation more sustainable is a key objective of numerous federal transportation outreach programs. By supporting these kinds of programs, the Government of Canada has helped schools, municipalities  businesses, associations and other community organizations assume leadership roles in developing healthy, safe and sustainable transportation options.

Employers and communities are encouraged to take advantage of these programs and launch local campaigns encouraging workers and citizens to make transportation choices that help reduce air pollution.

The programs listed below are coordinated, funded or developed in collaboration with the Government of Canada. Additional programs and information sources are also available from non-government organizations.

Programs receiving funding from Environment Canada

  • Commuter Challenge: Take part in the commuter challenge and help reduce air pollution. If you are a community leader, invite citizens to try using a sustainable mode of transportation to commute for one week. You can create challenges between workplaces and even compete with other cities!
  • Urban Bus Retrofit - Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA): Environment Canada has an agreement with CUTA to design and deliver a national pilot project retrofitting urban buses with diesel oxidation catalysts which significantly reduce harmful emissions. CUTA is working with 14 transit authorities across the country: Victoria, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, St. Albert, Saskatoon, Windsor, Toronto, Ottawa, Gatineau, Quebec City, Halifax, St. John's and St. John.
  • Vehicle Scrappage Program: Voluntary vehicle scrappage programs are run and developed by local community organizations. They are supported by local partners and Environment Canada. These programs provide incentives to remove older vehicles from the road.

Programs encouraging transportation choices

Fuel and Fleet Programs

  • Vehicle Fuels Program: This Natural Resources Canada's web site promotes and encourages the production and end-use of alternative fuels such as biodiesel, ethanol, natural gas and hydrogen, as well as cleaner conventional fuels such as low-sulphur diesel and reformulated gasoline. Learn how these fuels are used and their economic and environmental benefits.
  • Fleet Smart: Administered by Natural Resources Canada, FleetSmart helps fleet managers, owners and owner-operators reduce fuel costs and vehicle emissions and improve productivity through energy-efficient practices.

Anti-idling and Gas Mower Programs

  • Idle-Free Initiative : Visit the Idle-Free Zone, (idling.gc.ca)  Canada's first Web site dedicated to helping individuals, schools, communities and environmental groups stop unnecessary engine idling in an effort to improve air quality and  reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.  Natural Resources Canada has developed ready-to-use graphic materials, articles, tools and templates that can help you organize a public education campaign at your workplace or develop a larger-scale awareness and outreach campaign in your community.
  • Mow Down Pollution Program: Coordinated by the Clean Air Foundation to encourage and reward people to replace their older, high polluting mowers with less polluting alternatives.
  • Car Heaven initiative:  This initiative of the Clean Air Foundation was designed to reward and enable people to get their older, high-polluting cars permanently off the road.
