Urban Bus Retrofit

Environment Canada has signed agreements with the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) to design and deliver a national urban transit bus retrofit project. CUTA is working with transit authorities across the country to deliver this program.

More than 330 transit buses in 15 Canadian cities, built between 1990 and 1993, have been retrofitted with Diesel Oxidation Catalysts. These older, higher polluting vehicles still travel substantial kilometers each year.

The Diesel Oxidation Catalysts reduce exhaust emissions of Particulate Matter (PM) by 20%, Carbon Monoxide (CO) by 40% and hydrocarbons (HC) which are the major component of volatile organic compounds (VOC)s by 50%. Retrofitting with Diesel Oxidation Catalysts will therefore lead to significant reductions of harmful emissions.
