Metals and their uses
Cobalt: a component of superalloys in which high strength, wear, corrosion and abrasion resistance are required, such as in the fabrication of jet aircraft engines, stationary gas turbines for pipeline compressors, magnet steels and stainless steels. It is also used in electroplating. Cobalt oxide is utilized as a blue dye additive in paints, glass and ceramics.
Copper: used in the production of cable, wire and electrical products, the manufacture of pipes for plumbing, heating, ventilation and building wire and sheet metal facings.
Lead: mainly used in the manufacture of automobile batteries. It is also used in radiation shielding.
Nickel: an integral component of stainless steel, it provides durability, strength and corrosion resistance. It is also used in alloy production for specialised applications.
Zinc: most commonly used in galvanizing, it provides corrosion protection to steel structures. It is also used in a wide range of chemicals for consumer products, agricultural feed supplements and fertilizers, and tires.
