Prairie and Northern Region
Environment Canada’s Prairie and Northern Region encompasses more than 50% of Canada’s land mass, and encompasses Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories.
The population of the region is approximately 5.3 million spread among large urban centers and small, isolated hamlets. The Calgary-Edmonton corridor is Canada’s fastest growing region and 4th largest urban concentration. Resource based industries of forestry, mining, conventional oil and gas, oil sands and agriculture drive the economies. As the population increases and development progresses, air quality will become an increasingly important issue.
