UV Advisory
Environment Canada is forecasting a 6% decrease in average ozone
from May to August over Southern Canada in 2000. This is predicted to result in an
average ultraviolet radiation (UV) increase to be about 7% over all of Southern Canada this
spring and summer. Over Northern Canada, UV is expected to increase by a similar amount.
Usually UV intensity is highest in June and July, reaching UV
index levels of between
7 and 8 (burn time about 20 min) in Southern British Columbia
levels of 4 (burn time
about 30 min) or higher begin in early April and last until mid
September.
In Northern British Columbia and Yukon, UV Index levels are
generally lower than in
southern British Columbia.
With a 7% UV increase, Southern Canada can expect an increase of
about
0.3 to 0.5 in UV index levels. This would increase the number of
days that sunburn
could occur in about 20 min or less. In Northern British Columbia
and Yukon the UV index
is expected to rise by a similar amount this summer.
