Industry Related Activities

Industrial activity is responsible for 89% of sulfur oxides (SOx) emissions and 32% of fine particles (PM2.5) emissions in Quebec . Several regulations have an impact on air pollution from industrial and commercial sources. Environment Canada makes sure that the various federal regulations that apply to the Quebec industry are well understood by undertaking all kinds of compliance promotion activities. Several other actions are also undertaken by governments and industry so as to reduce the latter's impact on air quality.

In Quebec, residential wood heating contributes 46% of the production of PM2.5. This sector can thus, in certain situations, be an important contributor to smog.
