Community Action
The vast majority of Canadians live and work in cities, and many industries and other forms of infrastructure are needed to support individual lifestyles. So it makes sense that communities and municipal governments are key partners with all levels of government in addressing clean air concerns. This partnership has been recognized in recent speeches from the throne and the calling for a New Deal for Cities.
The Government of Canada is working with a number of organizations to explore the opportunities and challenges facing cities in being able to contribute to global sustainability, including the goal of clean air. Some of these organizations include:
- Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM)
- International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI)
- Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC)
- Ecoaction
Other resources to assist communities include:
- Various programs for sustainable transportation, awareness, citizen monitoring, among many others.
- The GTA-Clean Air Online Pilot supported by The Clean Air Partnership
- Greater Toronto Area Clean Air Council (GTA-CAC)
- CANMET Energy Technology Centre (Natural Resources Canada)
- The Pembina Institute and its Community Eco-Solutions section
- Canadian Pollution Prevention Information Clearinghouse
