Lawn and Garden Equipment

The use of small engines such as those in lawn and garden machines and light industrial equipment such as portable compressors and generators, results in emissions of air pollutants such as VOCs, NOx and CO. It is estimated that such engines contributed approximately 9% of the VOC emissions from transportation and off-road sources in Canada in 2000.

The Off-Road Small Spark-Ignition Engine Emission Regulations
(full regulations) establish standards for smog forming emissions for spark-ignition engines rated up to 19 kW (25 hp). These are typically gasoline-fuelled engines found in lawn and garden machines (hedge trimmers, brush cutters, lawnmowers, garden tractors, snowblowers, etc.), in light-duty industrial machines (generator sets, welders, pressure washers, etc.), and in light-duty logging machines (chainsaws, log splitters, shredders, etc.). The Regulations apply to 2005 and later model-year engines.
