Residential properties in Coquitlam receive an annual utility bill at the end of February each year. The bill is due March 31st. A 5% penalty is added to amounts outstanding on March 31st. If the bill remains unpaid at Sep 30th, another 5% penalty is added to the account. Coquitlam residents are responsible for payment of utilities whether or not they receive a notice. Unpaid utilities at year end are transferred to taxes in arrears and become subject to daily interest charges.
Utilities are billed on a flat rate basis. Utility rates for 2005 are as follows:
- Water - $225.00 per dwelling unit
- Garbage & Recycling - $155.00 per dwelling unit (single family dwelling)
- Recycling only - $18.00 per dwelling unit (multi family dwellings participating in the recycling program)
Parcels with more than one dwelling unit will also see a Sewer and Drainage Levy, on their utility bill, of $258.00 for each additional dwelling unit (except Secondary Suites). The sewer and drainage fees for the first dwelling are included on the property tax bill.
When the additional unit is a Secondary Suite, a sewer rate of 40 percent of the flat sewerage rate (rounded to the nearest dollar) will be payable. The water levy for a secondary suite is 40 percent of the flat rate water charge, rounded to the nearest dollar.
