ED 210-10R - Guidelines for Alcohol Determination - Procedure for the Re-Examination of Previously Approved Pycnometers

September 2001

INTRODUCTION

This guideline states the frequency and the procedure to be followed for the re-examination of previously approved pycnometers used for the determination of alcoholic strength for excise purposes.

FREQUENCY OF EXAMINATION OF PYCNOMETERS

Pycnometers are very delicate instruments. They may, over time, give erroneous readings for a variety of reasons. It is therefore necessary to re-examine pycnometers every two years to ensure that they can accurately determine alcoholic strength for excise purposes.

Pycnometers which have been approved will be re-examined 24 months after the last approval date. The procedure will then be reiterated every 24 months thereafter. The Laboratory and Scientific Services Directorate (LSSD) will undertake to advise licensees as re-examination is required.

In addition, excise officers may request the re-examination of pycnometers at any time.

RE-EXAMINATION OF PYCNOMETERS

Pycnometers are approved and approvals are revoked in accordance with the following:

  • the "Protocol for the Certification of a Pycnometer";
  • the "Protocol for the Examination and Approval of Pycnometers"; and
  • the letter sent from the LSSD to the licensees with the three Quality Control Spirit samples.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Information or enquiries concerning this procedure, pycnometer protocols or Quality Control Spirits should be communicated to the Chief, Alcohol and Tobacco Section, Laboratory and Scientific Services Directorate at (613) 954-9944.

This supersedes Circular ED 210-10, dated October 2000.
