How to Interpret Satellite Images

The satellite pictures shown on this web site are colour-enhanced infrared (IR) images taken from the GOES-8 geostationary satellite. Colour on IR imagery is used to represent cloud-top temperatures, giving an indication of cloud height (the colder the cloud-tops, the higher the clouds extend into the atmosphere). Meteorologists use this type of imagery in conjunction with visual satellite pictures to determine the depth and extent of cloud systems, diagnose atmospheric processes, and track the development, dissipation and motion of all weather systems. The sample picture below gives a few hints at interpretation.
