Public Lands on PEI

The Government of Prince Edward Island is the largest landowner on PEI. The legal title to these
lands is held for the public trust by various entities of and within the government of PEI.

The Eastern,
Western
and French
School Districts hold legal title to the school properties which are located within there respective
jurisdiction. The
School Act RSPEI Cap S-2.1 provides for the acquisition, disposal, and management of these properties.

The Prince Edward Island
Liquor Control Commission
by virtue of the
Liquor Control Act RSPEI
Cap. L-14 holds title to and manages liquor stores and warehousing facilities.

PEI Business Development Inc
holds title to and manages a number of parcels of land
throughout the Island by virtue of the Prince Edward
Island
Business Development Inc. Act Cap. B-6.2

The various
health agencies
and their designates hold title to hospitals and various
other health care facilities within the Province by
virtue of the
Health and Community Services Act Cap.H-1.1 .

Provincial property is defined as those public
lands whose legal title is held by the Minister of
Transportation and Public Works by virtue of the
Public Works Act Cap. P-34
. These lands encompass
some 1900 distinct parcels as well as the public highway
system and the Confederation Trail.

The management of these lands has been assigned to various Divisions
within Government Departments to be used in carrying out the specific
mandates of the respective Departments. The three
main managers are:
