Title:
Hydrometric Gauging Station Network

Description:

Abstract:
Hydrometric Gauging Stations is an ESRI point coverage of the hydrometric gauging stations across the watersheds of the Canadian Prairies. Each station knows its name and other information that allow output watersheds/basins to be developed.

Purpose:

To supply the thematic layer of hydrometric gauging stations of the PFRA Watershed Project for hydroligic analyses and mapping in watershed management across the Canadian prairies.

PRIMARY
Attribute_Definition:
GAUGE PRIMACY: Each gross polygon contains at least one hydrometric gauging station. In gross polygons with two or more gauging stations (for example, a stream gauge and a lake gauge), the PRIMARY item indicates which gauging station is designated as primary. The primary gauging station is used as the sole downstream outlet (in NETWORK considerations) for the gross polygon. A PRIMARY = 1 designates a primary gauge; a PRIMARY = 0 designates a secondary gauge. When only one gauging station is present in a gross polygon, it must be assigned a PRIMARY = 1.

Attribute:

Attribute_Label:
SUB_EC
Attribute_Definition:
Name of Environment Canada Sub-basin. This 3-character attribute is based on the first 3 characters of Environment Canada's gauging station names. The name is designed to be hierarchical. Stations whose names share the first 3 characters, are meant to share a common "reach" in the drainage system. Note: Some gauges were labelled in a mistaken "reach". As a result, there are some gauging stations whose first 3 name characters will not match their sub_ec string. As well, Provincial gauging stations with a 6 digit number ie (059-012) have been assigned to their proper 3 character sub_ec "reach".

CONTRIBUTING AREA: The contributing (effective) area (in sq. kms.) within the incremental area of a hydrometric gauging station. "Contributing" areas contribute to downstream accumulations of streamflow for a median (1:2) annual runoff. "Contributing area" is the difference between the gross and non-contributing areas. An incremental area is the catchment between a selected hydrometric gauging station and the next upstream station(s)

NON-CONTRIBUTING AREA: The sum of the non-contributing areas (in sq. kms) within the incremental area of a hydrometric gauging station. "Non-contributing" areas DO NOT contribute to downstream accumulations of streamflow for a median (1:2) annual runoff. An incremental area is the catchment between a selected hydrometric gauging station and the next upstream station(s)
