- Abstract:
- The Environment Canada 4-Character Sub-basin product is the most detailed watershed product. It is an ESRI polygon coverage of over 324 basins which cover (in Canada) Northern British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and (in the United States) North Dakota, Montana, and Minnesota that are based on the first four-character designation of the hydrometric gauging stations' names.
Purpose:
- To supply the thematic layer of Environment Canada four-character sub-basins of the PFRA Watershed Project for hydrologic analyses and mapping in watershed management across the Canadian prairies.

Stations whose names share the first 4 characters are meant to share a common sub-basin in the drainage system. Note: Some gauges were labelled in a mistaken sub-basin. Those "mis-numbered" stations have been reassigned to their proper 4-character sub-basin, while their station 'numbers' have remained unchanged.
