"Smoke, Lies and Videotape" Contest

2005 Contest

"Smoke, Lies and Videotape" Contest is a video compilation from award winning public service announcements produced by Grade 8 to 12 students in schools in British Columbia (BC).  They are the "best of the best, the winners of the winners", from contests held in each of the five Health Authorities across BC, during the 2004-2005 school year, on the topic of access, or how kids get theirs smokes.

This winning entry of the compilation, as chosen by over 7,000 students in BC, is "Don't Give Addiction" by Perry O'Neill and Steofain Plancke from the Rutland Sr. Secondary School in Rutland, BC.

2004 Contest

The Health Canada, Tobacco Control Programme in British Columbia (B.C.) is pleased to announce that the Public Service Announcement "Do You See A Difference" produced by students at Timberline Secondary School (Campbell River, B.C.) was voted the winner of the second annual "Smoke, Lies and Videotape" Contest.

In 2004, the programme funded this contest through the provincial Regional Health Authorities, which asked B.C. students in Grades 8 -12 to produce a :30 or :60 second public service announcement (PSA) on the topic of access and social sourcing of tobacco products. The response from the students was overwhelming. Of all the great submissions, 10 PSAs were selected for the final round by regional tobacco stakeholders and youth.

Health Canada then partnered with the Knowledge Network to produce a video compilation of the 10 PSA's. A video was sent to approximately 750 schools in B.C., along with ballot entry forms for students to vote for their favourite. A total of 10, 578 votes were received. Random draws for movie passes were drawn from all the entry forms.
