Other Federal Programs

There are many federal programs and publications that can help you do business with the government, several of which are outlined below. Contracts Canada encourages you to use these programs to your full advantage.

Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

ACOA is a federal government agency. Headquartered in the Atlantic Region, ACOA's goal is to improve the economy of Atlantic Canadian communities. The ACOA Business Development Program provides assistance to small and medium-sized businesses in Atlantic Canada to start-up, expand, modernize and become more competitive. Non-profit organizations providing support to the business community may also qualify.

Atlantic-based small or medium-sized businesses may receive up to $250,000 over a period of two years to help cover the cost of preparing bids and other procurement activities, including:
  • pre-production costs
  • specialized training
  • consultants' fees
  • travel costs

Canadian Economic Development for Quebec Regions

Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (formerly the Federal Office for Regional Development - Quebec) is mandated to respond to the specific economic characteristics and needs of the regions of Quebec. The Agency's mission is to support development of the economic potential of the regions of Quebec and the creation of sustainable employment by fostering a business climate that enables small and medium-sized businesses to prosper and grow.

Federal Economic Development Initiative in Northern Ontario

The Federal Economic Development Initiative in Northern Ontario (FedNor) is aimed at encouraging economic growth and diversification, job creation and income generation to meet the needs of small- and medium-sized businesses throughout Northern Ontario by supporting private sector initiatives. It has offices in Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury.

Canadian General Standards Board

The Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) offers a variety of standardization services to meet government needs. These include development of standards and specifications, listings of qualified and certified products and services, quality system registration and distribution and sale of standards. These services cover commodities such as office furniture, paints, petroleum, textiles, hand tools, paper products, forms, office supplies and janitorial supplies. Western Economic Diversification

Western Economic Diversification (WED) works to increase procurement opportunities for companies in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. WED also works to increase the number of Western Canadian companies involved in major Crown projects. PWGSC and provincial government departments regularly hold joint seminars with WED for companies on how to do business with the government.

Canada Business Service Centres

The Canada Business service centres are designed to improve business access to a wide range of information on government services, programs and regulations. The Centres are a co-operative effort between federal, provincial and private sector organizations. A CBSC has been established in a major city in each province. Some of the key products and services each CSBC offer are:

  • a toll free front-line telephone information and referral service;
  • the Business Information System (BIS), a comprehensive database of information on the services and programs of participating departments and organizations.

Canadian Commercial Corporation

The Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) helps Canadian companies export goods and services by identifying Canadian firms to foreign governments and international agencies looking for specific goods or services.

Export Development Canada

The Export Development Canada (EDC) provides financial help such as insurance, guarantees and long-term loans to exporters and investors to help them compete in international markets.

Business Development Bank of Canada

The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) is a financial institution wholly owned by the Government of Canada. BDC plays a leadership role in delivering financial, investment and consulting services to Canadian small business, with a particular focus on the technology and export sectors of the economy.

Industry Canada

Industry Canada (IC) runs several services of interest to suppliers:

  • Strategis: Canada's largest business information Web site provides business with easy, direct access to Industry Canada's information resources. Strategis helps companies identify new markets, explore opportunities for growth, find partners, form alliances, discover and develop new technologies or processes, or assess the risk of new ventures.
  • Canadian Company Capabilities: Strategis includes this online database listing over 32,000 Canadian companies and their products and services.
  • The Market Intelligence Service publishes reports and provides information on Canadian and U.S. markets for specific products, including detailed analyses of specific products that could lead to new or expanded manufacturing in Canada.
