Financial Assistance for Victims to Attend National Parole Board Hearings


WHO MAY APPLY

Victims who wish to attend a National Parole Board (NPB) hearing may apply if they have:

  • registered with Correctional Service of Canada or National Parole Board to obtain information pursuant to the Corrections and Conditional Release Act,
  • applied to NPB to attend a NPB hearing of the offender who harmed them, and
  • been approved by the NPB to attend the hearing.

WHAT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE?

  • Travel, hotel and meal expenses, in accordance with current Government of Canada Travel Guidelines will be provided to victims to travel from their home to and from the NPB hearing. In most cases, those receiving financial assistance will travel the day before the hearing and return home the day following the hearing (maximum 3 days expenses and maximum 2 nights hotel accommodation unless travelling from a rural or remote area or great distance).

HOW TO APPLY

  • Applications should be submitted at least 30 days before the anticipated hearing date. Please submit the form with as much information as possible and provide additional necessary information as soon as it is available.
    • Where the application is received 30 days before the hearing date, and is approved, part payment of the eligible expenses may be paid before the hearing and the balance will be paid after the hearing .
    • Where the application is received less than 30 days before the hearing, eligible expenses will be reimbursed after the hearing. Applicants will receive a letter before the hearing date confirming that the application has been approved and indicating the eligible expenses that will be reimbursed.
  • Complete the application form attached and send it to:

Note:

  • Financial Assistance may be provided to registered victims who attend NPB hearings that occur on or after November 1, 2005.
  • Information you provide may be subject to a request under the Access to Information Act and/or the Privacy Act . (Note: Both Acts provide for the protection of personal information from disclosure. Although unlikely, in certain cases the Government may be required to disclose. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.)
  • Applications should be submitted as far in advance as possible before the proposed hearing date so that funds are available when required. A letter confirming eligible expenses will be provided as soon as possible.

You will be asked to complete a short, confidential survey, that will be sent sometime after the hearing, in order for the program to be evaluated and improvements made. Your participation would be appreciated.
