Q1:

I am having technical difficulties with the site. Where do I go for help?

A1:

If you are having trouble with the site, please contact the Speakers Bureau directly at bureau@csc-scc.gc.ca.

Q2:

The speaker I have chosen doesn't live near me. How are travel arrangements made for this type of situation?

A2:

You are welcome to invite this speaker to your event however, you will be responsible for his or her travel costs. CSC does not have funding available to offset these costs.

Q3:

I can't find anyone suitable for my event. What should I do?

A3:

You may want to broaden your search so that you find more speakers to match your criteria. If you still can't find someone, contact the Speakers Bureau manager at bureau@csc-scc.gc.ca.

Q4:

Do I have to pay the speaker for their time?

A4:

No. The Speakers Bureau is a voluntary program that CSC employees join in addition to their regular work responsibilities.

Q5:

Am I allowed to give my speaker a gift or honorarium after the presentation?

A5:

You are certainly welcome to thank your speaker with a small gift or honorarium after the presentation. However, please note that this is not mandatory and you are under no obligation to make this gesture.

Q6:

I had an exceptional speaker at my event. How can I make sure that this person gets recognition from his or her supervisor?

A6:

If you had an exceptional speaker at your event, please send a note to the Speakers Bureau manager. We are then able to contact this person's supervisor to let him or her know.

Q7:

Why did I have to give my organization's information before searching for a speaker?

A7:

CSC is interested in gauging how many people are accessing the Speakers Bureau, the types of groups that are using the service, and their geographic locations. This information is stored in the database and enables us to measure the effectiveness of the service and make changes accordingly.

Who is listed in the Speakers Bureau?

A8:

The Speakers Bureau lists all Correctional Service of Canada staff who are available to speak at public events. Speakers work in varied aspects of criminal justice, in areas that directly and indirectly affect offenders. Professional titles of speakers range from Wardens, Correctional Officers and Parole Officers to Psychologists, Chaplains and Regional Directors.

What type of events do speakers usually speak at?

A9:

Presentations at schools, colleges and universities are very common. However, presentations have also been done for religious and community service organizations. There is no set definition of what kinds of events are acceptable. If you are looking for a speaker on a CSC specific subject, the Speakers Bureau can help you find a speaker. If you have more questions, please contact the Speakers Bureau directly at bureau@csc-scc.gc.ca.

What topics do speakers speak on?

A10:

Speakers have expertise in a variety of topics related to the management of institutions and the supervision of offenders in the federal correctional system. This includes, but is not limited to, penitentiaries, rehabilitation and programs, Aboriginal offenders, women offenders, mental health, reintegration and more. How do I become a speaker with the Speakers Bureau?

Only CSC employees are eligible to join the Speakers Bureau. For more information, please contact the Bureau directly at bureau@csc-scc.gc.ca.

Are there resources available to help registered speakers plan and deliver their presentations?

A12:

Yes. Information is available from the Speakers Tools page. Speakers must login to access this page and select “Speakers Tools” from the left menu bar.
