The following section explains the important role played by Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) in the ongoing management of these heritage buildings.

As custodian of federal real property, PWGSC is responsible for the long-term renovations and maintenance of Parliament Hill. In this role, the Department works closely with the Senate, the House of Commons and the Library of Parliament, the permanent occupants of the Parliament Buildings.

The Parliamentary Precinct Directorate (a part of PWGSC) was established in September 1991 with the mandate to manage the assets occupied by the Senate, the House of Commons and the Library of Parliament.

Its portfolio of real property comprises approximately 143,000 m² (1,539,290 ft²) of space, made up of the East, Centre and West Blocks; the Library of Parliament; the Confederation, Justice, Wellington, Victoria and La Promenade buildings; and several leases and other small blocks of space. The Parliamentary Precinct Directorate is also responsible for all buildings located on the north side of Sparks Street, in Ottawa.

Fulfilling a National Trust

In recognition of the importance of these buildings and the work that goes on there, Public Works and Government Services Canada has devoted a great deal of attention over the years to the preservation and enhancement of these structures. However, many repairs have been deferred in recent decades during times of fiscal restraint. As a result, the interiors and exteriors of the buildings are in urgent need of restoration. The conservation work now under way will ensure that the Parliament Buildings are preserved as a national trust for future generations.
