Government On-Line Chronicle

Canada has a long history of achievements when it comes to improving services through the use of technology: in 1876, Alexander Graham Bell makes the first long distance telephone call from Brantford to Paris, Ontario; in 1901, Guglielmo Marconi receives the first transatlantic wireless message; in 1906, Reginald Fessenden broadcasts the first voice/music message; in 1972, Canada launches the first geostationary domestic communications satellite (Anik A); in 1999, Canada has the first all-optical national research network and is the first country to connect all public schools and libraries to the Internet.

Government On-Line falls in step with these pioneering initiatives as it starts its journey in October 1999. At that time, the Speech from the Throne charts a service improvement agenda that aims to provide e-services for citizens, establish Canada as a leader in the knowledge-based economy, and modernize government. The task is not trivial as the federal government comprises over 120 departments, agencies, and Crown corporations responsible for more than 1600 programs and services. The whole initiative was based on a few overarching principles and key areas of activities.
