The Translation Bureau

Since its inception in 1934, the Translation Bureau has been meeting the translation and revision needs of federal departments, agencies and those of both houses of Parliament. This mandate was broadened in 1987 to include vocal interpretation, sign-language interpretation and terminology.

Mission and mandate

The Translation Bureau is charged with supporting the Government of Canada in its efforts to provide services to, and communicate with, Canadians in the official language of their choice.

To this end, the Translation Bureau...

  • provides translation, interpretation and terminology products and services to Parliament, the Judiciary and federal departments and agencies in English, French and foreign languages, as required;
  • provides such services to other orders of Canadian government and to international organizations upon request; and
  • standardizes terminology within the federal government.

Putting quality into words

Throughout the years, the Translation Bureau has gained an uncontested reputation for its reliability and effectiveness in achieving the results its clients require.

People and techniques, however, are continually changing. Fortunately, our translators, interpreters, terminologists and technical professionals all possess an admirable quality: they see perfection as an attainable goal. Their incredible expertise, know-how and enthusiasm is the Translation Bureau's driving force.

The Translation Bureau is on the move!

This is an exciting time for the Bureau, the Canadian language industry and for all Canadians. New technologies and linguistic methods are emerging, as are interesting opportunities for our clients. We are constantly searching for innovative ways to provide our customers with new services and to improve upon existing ones.

In recent years, we have witnessed the explosion of the Internet at all levels of government. The Government On-Line initiative was undertaken to provide Canadians with enhanced access to improved, integrated services, anytime, anywhere, in either of Canada's official languages. Each site that goes online must be translated and modified to fit the language and culture in which it is being presented. No small task! The Translation Bureau, however, has met the challenge head on.
