The following is the text of a statement by the Honourable Beverley Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, on the occasion of October 18, Persons Day.

OTTAWA, Ontario -- Today, we recognize the amazing contribution of the "Famous Five." In 1929, these five Canadian women - Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby and Nellie McClung - fought and won the right for women to be recognized as persons and therefore, eligible to sit in the Senate.

The Famous Five fought for what they believed in. All generations that came after them benefit with opportunities that might not have been theirs without the efforts of these remarkable women.

Canada's new government recognizes the historic landmark this date represents for all Canadians. Women throughout Canada's history have made exceptional and worthy contributions to our nation.

Nellie McClung once said, "Women who set a low value on themselves make life hard for all women." Like the Famous Five, I believe that valuing oneself goes hand-in-hand with valuing others. These women are truly an inspiration to us all - for it tells me I am not "just a woman," I am a person.

One of the Famous Five, Louise McKinney, said it best when she said, "The purpose of a woman's life is just the same as the purpose of man's life - that she may make the best possible contribution to the generation in which she is living."

On behalf of the new Government of Canada, I invite all Canadians to join me in remembering this important day.
