Canadian Transportation Agency Advises Travellers to Comply With Air Carriers’ Check-In Times

OTTAWA - February 3, 2006 - The Canadian Transportation Agency advises travellers to always comply with check-in time limits to avoid being refused transportation with no liability on the part of the carrier.

An article published on the front page of The Globe and Mail on February 3, 2006, left the impression that travellers do not have to respect air carriers' check-in times. This is not the case. It is in the best interest of travellers to always verify with their carrier how long in advance of the flight time they must check in. Therefore, travellers should arrive at the airport with plenty of time to check in, clear security and reach the departure gate.

Travellers who feel that an air carrier might not have respected the terms and conditions of carriage set out in its tariff should first discuss the problem with the carrier. When complaints are not resolved to their satisfaction, help can be obtained from the Canadian Transportation Agency, including informal mediation to facilitate the resolution of the issue.

For more hints on reservations and check-in, fares and ticketing, baggage, travel documents, as well as flight delays and cancellations, consult the Fly Smart booklet available on the Agency's Web site. To obtain a free copy, call toll-free: 1-888-222-2592, from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Eastern Time.

The Canadian Transportation Agency is an independent quasi-judicial tribunal that regulates various modes of transportation under Government of Canada jurisdiction, including air, marine and rail.
