POLICY RESEARCH LINKS GENDER EQUALITY WITH PUBLIC POLICY AGENDA

OTTAWA -- A new series of fact sheets that synthesizes research funded by Status of Women Canada's Policy Research Fund and completed by theme provides a brief review of policy research supporting gender equality.

"Good public policy depends on good policy research," the Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) said today. "The policy research funded by Status of Women Canada (SWC) provides a good source of well-researched information on a variety of issues emerging on the public policy agenda. The fact sheets provide a brief overview of the research topic and findings and as such are a useful tool for researchers, advocates and media alike." Additional fact sheets will be added as all of the research on a particular theme is completed.

The research highlights emerging trends or new policy issues such as trafficking in women, women's paid and unpaid work, policy gaps, new policy directions and options and provides an analysis and critique of existing policies that will serve the public policy agenda. SWC's Policy Research Fund supports independent policy research on issues linked to the public policy agenda and in need of gender-based analysis. The objective is to enhance public debate on gender equality issues and to enable individuals, organizations, policy makers and policy analysts to participate more effectively in the development of policy.

Research on selected themes is funded through a competitive call for proposals process. Past themes have included Young Women at Risk; Women's Paid and Unpaid Work; Factoring Diversity into Policy Analysis and Development; Women's Vulnerability to Poverty; Canada Health and Social Transfer and its Impacts on Women; Women and the Canadian Human Rights Act; and Women's Access to Justice. Copies of the fact sheets and the full reports are available from Status of Women Canada, 123 Slater Street, 10th Floor, Ottawa, Ontario  K1P 1H9 or from our Web site: www.swc-cfc.gc.ca.
