THE HONOURABLE JEAN AUGUSTINE EXPRESSED HER CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF IRMA WRIGHT

OTTAWA -- The Honourable Jean Augustine, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), made the following statement on learning of the passing of Irma Wright:

"I was saddened to learn of the passing, on October 8, of a great Canadian woman, Irma Wright, who, at the young age of 19, signed the petition that eventually led to the formal recognition of women as persons in 1929.

Irma's contribution to Canadian society will not soon be forgotten. Irma enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Upon her return, she became involved in politics and in the continued efforts for full and real equality of women and men. She was an active member of the Status of Women Action Committee.

I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the family of Irma Wright"
