Information Specialists

To produce useful intelligence information for the Government of Canada, CSIS relies on effective and timely access to a wide range of unclassified information resources and to its own comprehensive information holdings. CSIS uses the expertise of librarians, library technicians, reviewers/classifiers, and media and archival analysts to deliver professional corporate information services.

For these positions, you must have strong interpersonal and analytical skills, and demonstrate initiative and judgement. Proficiency in both official languages and computer literacy are required.

To be considered for employment as an Information Specialist, you must

• possess a master’s degree in library and information studies (librarian);


• possess a library technician diploma (library technician);



• possess a university degree (media analyst);



• possess a records management certification or acceptable combination of education and experience (reviewer/classifier, archival analyst).

Scientists

Scientists must be proficient in research, analysis, problem solving, and communications skills. Prior experience in a forensics environment is an asset. Scientists may be required to travel and apply their skills in an operational environment that does not lend itself to the use of standard laboratory tools. They must, therefore, be innovative and creative in the application of their knowledge and skills. Most incumbents undergo a four-year internship prior to assuming the full range of responsibilities.

Engineers

Engineers are required to work closely with clients to identify operational technology requirements and to develop options for meeting those needs. By liaising with industry experts and attending technology conferences, they obtain early notice of technology advances that may have an impact on the technology used in CSIS operations. Engineers ensure that CSIS operations gain maximum benefit from the timely acquisition of these technologies or development of a response to deal with them. Several years of experience in project management is an asset. Senior positions require experience at the program management level.

• possess a university degree in computer engineering, or telecommunications engineering, or electronics engineering.

Technologists

Technologists must possess a high degree of manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude in electronics, mechanical engineering, computer sciences, or imaging disciplines. Extensive experience in the application of one or more of these disciplines in a security, police, or telecommunications environment is an asset. Technologists must be able to work effectively on a team and be willing to travel on short notice. Less experienced technologists can be placed in developmental positions.

Information Technology Specialists

Programmer and Software Analysts develop, enhance, and implement information systems and programs to support CSIS’s computing needs. They are responsible for researching, designing, developing, acquiring, and maintaining a diverse range of computing and telecommunication systems, applications, and technologies. Programmers and Software Analysts should have experience in application development practices, and have demonstrated abilities and experience with current programming languages and tools. Software Analysts should have experience supporting, administering, configuring, and installing software products, applications, and networking technologies.

• possess a university degree or college diploma with a concentration in information technology.

Freelance Translators / Interpreters

CSIS seeks individuals with proficiency in one or more foreign or non-official language, as well as excellent communication skills in English or French for inclusion on its list of freelance translators and interpreters. Freelance Translators and Interpreters translate a variety of textual material and perform other language-related work. Contracts vary in length and complexity and may require travel and testimony in court as an expert witness. Applicants should have experience as a translator or interpreter and be available for short-term contracts anywhere in Canada on short notice. Most work must be done on CSIS premises. Preference will be given to certified members of provincial associations of translators and interpreters recognized by the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC).

To be considered as a Freelance Translator/Interpreter, you must

• possess a university degree in languages or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
