Windows

Windows are not only important aesthetic features of a building; they are also critical components of the building envelope—letting light in, preventing warm or cool air from escaping, and providing a dependable seal against rain and other moisture.

The window systems in the Library of Parliament were created in the late 1800s in the style of the time. Many included leaded glass windows: these consisted of heavy glass with lead caming plus interior windows, no two of them exactly identical in size or shape. Over the years, their caulking and sealant dried and crumbled. Many windows had begun to leak, some so severely that in stormy weather Library staff would rush to cover books with plastic sheeting. The interior walls around the windows showed signs of water damage in many places.

All 147 leaded glass windows were removed and repaired as part of the renewal project. In many cases, the cames disintegrated entirely, requiring specialized craftspeople to re-make the windows completely. To improve the energy efficiency of the building, a set of new thermal windows was added on the interior at every window opening. This combination of old and new preserves the original beauty while adding a modern touch that will add to the building's longevity.
