The 1867 Wing of the East Block, currently occupied by the Senate, the House of Commons and the Library of Parliament, was last renovated in the early 1970s. Following the completion of renovations to the Centre Block in 2016, the 1867 Wing of the East Block will undergo extensive renovations.

East Block 1867 Wing Renovations

Renovations for the East Block's 1867 Wing are planned to begin in 2017. They are likely to include:

  • Stabilization of the Northwest Tower.
  • Re-pointing of load-bearing masonry.
  • New copper rooves and parapets.
  • Upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Elevator refurbishment.
  • A new fire alarm system.
  • New cabling pathways

When the work is finished in 2019, the East Block will house 44 Senate office units, 6 committee rooms, several museum rooms, and support services.

Confederation Building

In Phase 4 of the Long-Term Vision and Plan, the Confederation Building, which currently houses 165 offices for parliamentarians, will undergo a complete renovation. In addition to building system upgrades, office layout and support systems will be modernized. When the work is complete in 2020, the building will house 130 office units, a branch of the Library of Parliament, and various support operations.
