Overview

In today's increasingly competitive world, organizations must consistently meet and exceed their goals. The most successful organizations attain the management systems standards recognized around the world - ISO 9001:2000 (quality), ISO 14001 (environmental), and OHSAS 18001 (occupational health and safety). The Canadian General Standards Board is the recognized name in helping organizations achieve registration to these standards, on time and within budget.

ISO 9001:2000 (Quality)

The CGSB is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada to assess and register your quality management system for conformance to the ISO 9001:2000 standard. Our independent and impartial assessment provides you with a clear, recognized process to increase and demonstrate your organization's quality. It confirms that

  • your quality system is working

  • you can provide goods and services to consistently meet clients' needs and expectations

  • you are continually improving your quality

In addition, we provide information, answer your questions, and provide presentations and courses on ISO 9001:2000 tailored to your needs.

ISO 14001 (Environmental)

The CGSB is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada to assess and register your environmental management system for conformance to the ISO 14001 standard. This standard is a result of the global interest and attention to environmental issues such as management of pollution and hazardous wastes. Registration of your environmental management system demonstrates that

  • you have a procedure for monitoring and complying with regulatory requirements

  • you exercise due diligence with respect to your environmental risks

  • your employees and suppliers are continually improving their own environmental performance

In addition, we provide information, answer your questions, and provide presentations and courses on ISO 14001 tailored to your needs.

Note: The CGSB offers registration to the new ISO 14001:2004 standard and will follow the International Accreditation Forum, Inc. (IAF) Guidance Document to convert existing ISO 14001:1996 registrations by May 2006.

OHSAS 18001 (Occupational health and safety)

The CGSB offers a certification program for occupational health and safety (OHS) management systems based on the widely accepted OHSAS 18001 specification. Certification to OHSAS 18001 enables an organization to control its OHS risks and to improve its performance. Our independent and impartial assessment of your OHS system provides evidence that

  • your OHS system is comprehensive

  • your organization protects your employees and others by reducing the risk of accidents

  • you continually improve your OHS system

HACCP Advantage
(Food safety)

HACCP Advantage Certification Program is the formalized process whereby a food safety management system is assessed against the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food's HACCP Advantage standard. It includes a review of an organization's documented HACCP Advantage management system and ongoing audits of the facility to ensure the HACCP Advantage management system has been implemented and is effective.

In many cases, implementing a HACCP Advantage management system means changing operations to lower the potential for food-borne illness, to define improvements for food safety and to reduce the need for product recall.

The CGSB's HACCP Advantage Certification Program provides you with a clear, recognized process to increase and demonstrate your organization's commitment to food safety. It confirms that your HACCP Advantage management system is working and that your staff provide a safe, quality product to your clients.

Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) have recently added two new certification levels – GMP Advantage and HACCP Advantage Plus+

GMP Advantage is the prerequisite section of HACCP Advantage. HACCP Advantage adds HACCP plans and Critical Control Points to GMP Advantage, and is certification to the full HACCP Advantage standard. HACCP Advantage Plus+ is certification to the full HACCP Advantage standard with added requirements for biosecurity and traceability. GMP Advantage, HACCP Advantage and HACCP Advantage Plus+ thus form a progressive series. They were created to encourage small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that fall outside a federal government program to work their way up through increasingly rigorous government-recognized certifications. The CGSB offers certification to the HACCP Advantage series.

Note:
  • GMP means Good Manufacturing Practices
  • HACCP means Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points
  • HACCP Advantage is a standard produced by OMAFRA for certification of food safety management systems for Ontario food processors.
