Terminology Standardization Services

Our goal-position the Translation Bureau at the hub of
language activity so that it can best fulfil its mandate which consists in part of standardizing and disseminating federal government terminology.

With many years of experience, a complete in-house training program and the support of a technolinguistic watch team, terminologists in the Terminology Standardization Directorate (TSD) are extremely well equipped to carry out their mandate and provide terminology standardization advice to their clients.

The TSD has made its flagship product, TERMIUM®, one of the world's largest linguistic databases and the standardization tool in the federal government. With TERMIUM® on CD-ROM, TERMIUM Plus®, the bilingual and multilingual glossaries and vocabularies it publishes, often free of charge, and linguistic recommendations, the TSD helps to enhance the quality of communications in both official languages.

Through the Federal Terminology Council, the TSD offers a forum for standardizing the terminologies of various federal departments and agencies. And because standardization is a collaborative effort, the TSD is a member of government networks, boards and committees, providing leadership for managers of public service terminology banks.

The TSD plays a pivotal role on the national scene and it has recently founded a National Terminology Council. The TSD also commited to workforce renewal, with initiatives such as partnerships with universities, and is helping meet major government objectives in recognizing our country's cultural and linguistic diversity.

With the blurring of international boundaries and the rapidly changing standardization and terminology needs stemming from globalization, the TSD is poised to play a key role in international standardization. It will offer compartments in TERMIUM® V to its outside collaborators and work with international organizations. It can thus support the major players on the language scene in Canada's public service and make the most of its central bank as a standardization tool.
