Context
Over the last few months, we met and surveyed representatives of the Computer Systems (CS) community to better understand the current professional development needs and wants of the group. The outcome was the following: IT Project Management is crucial to the community across the public service. What also came out of the meetings is that the community profile has changed over several years and most members now have college or university diplomas, therefore reducing the number of people who are looking for university undergraduate level education.

In light of these outcomes and in order to deliver the best possible program in the most convenient manner to you, we believe that our IT Project Management Program must be adapted to meet the Government of Canada’s functional requirements. We are therefore developing an IT Project Management Professional Certification, which will be recognized by the Project Management Institute (PMI).

To this affect, we have decided to phase-out our current IT Project Management University Certificate Program over the next two years. This change will allow us to offer a curriculum that is not only beneficial for the community but also more suited to busy schedules.

Why: (are we phasing out of our IT Project Management Certificate? Why it is important to complete it?)
In the last 3 years, the public sector environment has changed considerably and the majority of CS community members now have a university or college diploma. Therefore, we have decided to modify our program and delivery method for you. Of course, some things will not change, including our unwavering commitment to shared services, value for tax dollars and commitment to delivering quality training to CS employees Canada-wide.

We recognize that many of you have invested a lot of effort in your studies and are in the midst of completing your Certificate. We encourage you to complete your Certificate and gain the knowledge and the abilities required to have a more challenging professional life. By doing so, you will reap the benefits of having your certificate and the GoC as a whole will be richer in professional skills.

The advantages of completing the Certificate.

  • Skills and abilities of Project Managers are in demand in the GoC.
  • As a leader in on-line services worldwide, the GoC constantly seeks leadership gained from completing the Certificate.
  • The IT Project Management Certificate is a self-promoting tool for GoC employees.
  • For more advantages, please refer the testimonials below.

When/Where: 2 years to complete certificate at TI
After evaluation, it is believed that a two-year period is sufficient for most students to complete their certificate.

“The certificate itself is a promotional tool in the public service.” Luc Rodier, CRA

"I wish the Program were a standard requirement for Project Managers," said Yohannes Berhe. "That's how important it is."

"The course content is excellent," agrees Denise Longchamps, a Project Manager in the Accounting, Banking and Compensation Branch. "It's all relevant information and the networking is great."
