Illegal DVD's Seized from Flea Market in Chatham, ON

(CHATHAM, ON - May 5, 2006) - On Wednesday, May 3, 2006, members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Federal Enforcement Section were contacted to assist members of the Chatham-Kent Police Service with the seizure of approximately 950 allegedly pirated DVD’s that were being sold at a Chatham flea market.

These DVD’s included films which are still showing in local movie theaters. They were being offered for sale at a package price of 5 DVD’s for approximately $20.

“Theft of intellectual property is a violation of the copyright laws,” stated Corporal Anne Garneau of the Windsor RCMP Federal Enforcement Section. “This is not a victimless crime and it is a growing threat to legitimate businesses.”

Charged is Rosanna GRAHAM, age 33, Mississauga Ontario. GRAHAM is charged with offering for sale or rental an infringing copy of work contrary to Section 42(1)(b) of the Copyright Act.

The RCMP is responsible for the enforcement of the Copyright Act. Offences under the Copyright Act are punishable by fines of up to $1 million or imprisonment of up to five years.
